Postponed town hall schedule due to construction difficulties causing delays
New City Hall Occupancy Delayed: Comprehensive Report to be Presented
The occupancy of the New City Hall has been delayed from its original planned date of December 1, 2025, and is now scheduled for mid-September 2026. This delay is due to a change of ownership during the project phase and unforeseen construction challenges during renovation.
The handover was initially set for the end of 2025, but the new landlord of the New City Hall, who is also the owner of the former AOK building on Bensberger StraΓe, informed the city that the renovation would take longer due to technical and structural challenges discovered only after gutting the building.
Despite these setbacks, progress is being made on the construction site. Recently, preparations for new wall positions in the building have begun. The city's preparations for the future occupancy, including digitization, e-file introduction, and organizational and technical equipment of the new work environment, are proceeding as planned.
Mayor Frank Stein remains committed to creating a modern, digital, and citizen-friendly administrative center with the New City Hall. He looks forward to the potential benefits the New City Hall will bring to the city in terms of perspective and development.
To provide transparency and clarity, a comprehensive status report on the New City Hall project will be presented to political bodies in the fourth quarter of 2025. This report aims to contextualize the reasons for the delay, explain the next steps, and present the project progress in detail.
Coordination and handoffs between project partners have been more complex than initially expected, but the project team is working diligently to address these complexities and ensure the successful completion of the New City Hall.
Despite the delay, the city and its residents can look forward to a state-of-the-art administrative center that will serve them for years to come.
