Potential New Tariffs on India: Trump's Affirmative Response Following Secretary's Mention of Russia Sanctions
The war in Ukraine has seen an escalation since the mediation between President Trump and Putin in Alaska, with the latest development being the bombing of the main government complex in Kyiv by Russian forces.
In response to this escalation, US President Donald Trump has expressed his readiness for more sanctions on Russia over the war in Ukraine. The Treasury Secretary, Janet Yellen, has called for these sanctions to be extended to countries buying oil from Russia, including India.
India, a prominent target of these US tariffs, has questioned the logic of the penalties, arguing that it is buying Russian oil in its sovereign national interest. US Vice President JD Vance has stated that the US aims to squeeze Russia's revenue stream from oil and gas sales.
Trump has accused India of "fueling the Russian war machine" with its oil purchases, a claim that India has yet to directly address.
Russia, however, has found customers for its oil and gas in countries like India, China, and elsewhere, ensuring a revenue flow despite the crippling sanctions from the US and Europe.
Janet Yellen believes that the collapse of the Russian economy, which could result from these sanctions, will force President Putin to negotiate with Ukraine. Yellen did not name any countries in her call for sanctions, but India is a key target.
This statement comes after a mutual-appreciation moment between President Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi through the press and social media. The future of this situation remains uncertain, with both the US and Russia continuing to assert their interests in the region.
