Potential succession plans for India's T20 captaincy may see Shubman Gill in the running.

In a significant move for Indian cricket, the selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, has chosen Shubman Gill to serve as deputy captain for the T20 squad in the upcoming Asia Cup. This marks Gill's first major tournament as a deputy captain in the shortest format of the game.

The selection was made online, with Gautam Gambhir, head coach, and other members of the committee participating in the meeting. The decision to groom Gill as the next T20 captain was a result of the committee's belief in his leadership qualities and his impressive performance in England.

Gill's selection comes after a busy stint with Test cricket, where he served as vice-captain in a previous tour. His leadership abilities and run-scoring prowess have made him one of India's top batsmen, earning him the position of deputy captain for the Asia Cup.

The Asia Cup, scheduled to take place from September 9 to 28 in the United Arab Emirates, is expected to feature both Suryakumar Yadav and Shubman Gill. Yadav, who served as captain during a previous tour, and Gill, his deputy, are set to lead the Indian team in the tournament.

The selection committee spent a considerable amount of time deliberating on Gill as the long-term replacement for Yadav. Despite Hardik Pandya being the initial choice for the vice-captain position, Gill's promise and dedication made him the right candidate for the committee to invest in.

However, Gill missed the T20I series in South Africa and the series against England due to a minor back injury and preparations for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Despite this, the committee believes that if Gill had not missed out on the T20 series, he would have retained his position as the vice-captain.

As the India cricket team aims to emerge as champions in the Asia Cup, the role of Shubman Gill as deputy captain will be crucial. His leadership abilities, combined with his proven performance, make him an asset to the team as they strive for victory.
