Parliamentary Service Commission Promotes Youth Engagement at ASK Show in Mombasa

In an effort to strengthen accountability and transparency, the Commission on Information and Public Communication has emphasized the importance of educating citizens about the budget cycle. This message was reinforced during the 2025 Mombasa International Agricultural Society of Kenya (ASK) Show, where the Parliamentary Service Commission (PSC) showcased its role, history, and mandate.

The PSC Stand at the ASK Mombasa Show provided a unique opportunity for more than 152 schools to engage with parliamentary processes. Pupils and students participated in debates, question sessions, and mock sittings, even presiding over sessions while dressed in the official attire of House Speakers and Clerks.

President William Ruto commended Parliament's outreach efforts, praising the mock chamber for students and the public to experience parliamentary proceedings. He reiterated the government's commitment to a people-centered approach at all levels, aiming to make services more accessible to Kenyans.

John Mutunga, Chairperson of the National Assembly's Committee on Agriculture, lauded the initiative, stating that it was vital in nurturing future leaders. Madam Orelia of Nyali Primary School expressed appreciation for Parliament's grassroots approach, stating that it makes the House more accessible.

The PSC Stand also highlighted Parliament's mission of fostering youth engagement, patriotism, peace, and national cohesion. Practical demonstrations were conducted to make parliamentary processes easier to understand, especially for schools unable to travel to Nairobi, according to teachers accompanying students.

The Commission on Information and Public Communication stressed the importance of public participation in governance. The PSC Stand offered ample time for students to learn about parliamentary procedures, providing them with a firsthand experience of how the House works.

In conclusion, the PSC's participation in the ASK Mombasa Show has been a significant step towards promoting youth engagement and fostering a culture of transparency and accountability in Kenyan governance.
