Prepares Rail Workshop in Erfurt for Electric Trains Powered by Batteries - Preparations underway for battery-powered trains at Erfurter Train Maintenance Facility
The Erfurt Train Depot, the only one of its kind operated by DB Regio in Thuringia, is marking a significant milestone as it celebrates its centennial. Originally constructed in 1925, this depot has been a cornerstone of rail transport in the region for over a century.
Operated by DB Regio, a subsidiary of Deutsche Bahn, the depot currently maintains 51 regional passenger trains in Thuringia, with a focus on three specific model series. Over the years, it has been continually updated with the latest technology, ensuring efficient and reliable service for passengers.
In a recent announcement, a spokesperson for Deutsche Bahn revealed that the Erfurt Train Depot will start maintaining trains for the Central Thuringian battery network from December 2028. This shift towards battery-powered trains is part of a larger project named "eTraxx," with which Deutsche Bahn is starting the operation of accumulator train networks in Erfurt.
To support this transition, a new infrastructure, including a 140-meter long roof stand, will be built. The depot's approximately 100 employees will promote higher specialization and qualification as they adapt to the new maintenance requirements.
The trains operating at the Erfurt Train Depot are part of the Thuringian tilting technology network and the North Thuringian diesel network. Connections at the depot include those between Erfurt and Gera, as well as towards Nordhausen. Additionally, vehicles from other federal states and third-party contracts also contribute to the mix at the Erfurt Train Depot.
As the Erfurt Train Depot looks towards the future, it continues to play a crucial role in Thuringia's rail transport. The construction of the new infrastructure and the shift towards battery-powered trains are exciting developments that promise to further improve the efficiency and sustainability of rail services in the region.
