Preparing to gamble on horse race number three, Almaqam, in the Arc race, with Ed Walker.
Almaqam Prepares for Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe
Trainer Ed Walker is considering entering Almaqam in the prestigious Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, following the horse's third-place finish in the traditional Arc trial race, the Prix Foy, earlier in September.
Almaqam's last race was a mile and a half long, and it marks the fourth race of the current campaign for the horse. The horse's performance in the Prix Foy was considered a good one by Walker, who described it as a "really good performance."
The owner's approval is needed for Almaqam to race in the Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, but Walker believes the horse wants the trip for the race. This sentiment was echoed by jockey William Buick, who suggested that if Almaqam is to race, it should be this year.
The Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe is expected to be a very competitive race, with Paddy Power listing the odds for the event. Almaqam is not listed among the favourites, but Walker is confident that the horse can put up a good fight.
The highlight of Almaqam's current campaign was beating Ombudsman in the Brigadier Gerard. However, the horse's last race was in July under Buick. Since then, Almaqam finished a head second behind Jayarebe on his final start last season in the Group 2 Prix Dollar at Longchamp.
In Sunday's Prix Foy, Almaqam beat Los Angeles into third place, with Sosie and Byzantine Dream finishing ahead of the horse. Byzantine Dream won the Group 1 Prix Foy, boosting Japan's hopes for an elusive Arc win.
Walker expressed some concerns about where to run Almaqam before deciding on the Prix Foy. However, after the horse's strong performance in the race, he is now leaning towards letting Almaqam run in the next Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp. The team said, "I'm pretty sure we'll head there."
The Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe is one of the most prestigious races in horse racing, and it will be interesting to see if Almaqam can make an impact in the event. With the owner's approval and Walker's confidence in the horse, it seems that Almaqam is ready to take on the challenge.
