Prescription Cannabis Costs: How Much Does It Cost?
In the heart of Europe, Germany has been providing medical cannabis to patients since 2017. However, the journey for those in need has not been without its challenges.
Current health policy discussions in Germany are centred around improving the cost structure and making the supply more transparent. A sustainable long-term supply requires not just individual solutions, but also policy decisions that address the cost issues and bureaucratic hurdles in the interest of those affected.
For someone who needs a gram of flowers daily, monthly expenses can range between 240 and 750 euros. The average cost for medical cannabis paid out-of-pocket in Germany ranges between approximately 150 € and over 500 € per month, depending on dosage and price per gram. Prices for flowers can vary from about 6 € to over 15 € per gram, while extracts or oils can cost between 200 and 350 euros per 10-ml bottle, and capsules can cost up to 400 euros per monthly supply.
Doctors have expressed concerns about the significant effort required for applications, while patients report long waiting times and unclear decision-making processes. Alternative treatments such as physiotherapy or classical pain therapies are options for some patients, although they may not provide the same benefits as cannabis.
Despite the high costs and bureaucratic hurdles, some private health insurers cover cannabis therapies under certain conditions. Hardship regulations also exist to financially support severely ill people.
Dispensing of medical cannabis continues to occur exclusively through pharmacies and only with a prescription. As the demand for medical cannabis continues to grow, it is hoped that policy changes will be made to address the cost and accessibility issues, ensuring that those who need it can access it with ease.
