"Prime Minister Modi Criticizes Congress Following GST Reforms, Emphasizes Economic Enhancements through 'Five Precious Stones'"
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced significant reforms to the Goods and Services Tax (GST) system, hailing it as one of the biggest economic reforms of independent India. The new reforms, ushered in by the GST council on 22 September, aim to simplify the tax system and boost the economy.
The reforms are related to the 'Matrishakti', as stated by PM Modi, and are expected to add 'five gems' to the Indian economy, essential for the country's growth. With these reforms, the Prime Minister believes that common people of the country will save money, and consumption and growth will increase.
Under the new norms, GST on many goods and services have been removed, making everyday items more affordable. The tax has been reduced on services like gym, salon, yoga, which will benefit the youth in the fitness sector. The Prime Minister also highlighted that the quality of life of Indian citizens will improve due to these reforms.
The GST reforms will simplify the tax stream, making it easier for businesses to comply with tax laws. This ease of doing business is expected to lead to increased investment and employment. The Prime Minister noted that cooperative federalism will become stronger for a developed India due to these reforms.
The new reforms feature a simplified tax system with two main tax rates of 5% and 18%. A new 40% tax rate has been introduced for luxury goods. The next GST reforms in India, announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 22, will come into effect on the same day, September 22, 2025.
Further reforms aimed at reducing prices on everyday items and supporting Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) are expected to roll out by Diwali (October 20, 2025). The Prime Minister promised a "double blast of happiness" before Diwali and Chhath Puja.
PM Modi mentioned that no work was done on GST before he became Prime Minister, and he added that the discussion around GST started before his tenure. The Prime Minister hailed GST reforms as one of the biggest economic reforms of independent India, emphasising the importance of next-generation reforms for India's self-reliance.
