Private equity company Macquarie supports the acquisition of ELEVEN-I by Nottingham-based firm.
In a strategic move to enhance wind turbine reliability globally, ONYX Insight, a leading predictive analytics provider for the global wind industry, has acquired ELEVEN-I, a Derbyshire-based company specialising in condition monitoring and advanced analytics for wind turbine blades.
Founded by Bill Slatter in 2019, ELEVEN-I was established with a mission to help wind operators understand how their blades perform under real-world conditions. With its cutting-edge sensors and damage detection software, ELEVEN-I ensures quick data capture and analysis, identifying even the most difficult-to-detect structural changes to optimise blade performance.
The acquisition of ELEVEN-I by ONYX Insight, headquartered in Nottingham, adds blade monitoring capability to ONYX Insight's whole-turbine predictive maintenance platform. This integration includes monitoring of drivetrain, structure, pitch, and blade health, providing an integrated view of the turbine's condition.
Dr Zhiwei Zhang, the CEO of ONYX Insight, stated, "As wind turbines grow in size and complexity, blade reliability has become a critical operational risk." The acquisition strengthens ONYX Insight's position by combining sensing technology, predictive analytics, and engineering expertise across the entire turbine.
The acquisition enables earlier fault detection, centralized issue tracking, and data-driven maintenance planning. This will help operators manage risk and optimise maintenance across their fleets, reducing unplanned O&M costs and the risk of catastrophic events such as blade detachment and full turbine collapse.
Macquarie Capital and Steven Bartlett-backed ONYX Insight launched in the US, and the acquisition of ELEVEN-I marks its expansion into the wind turbine blade monitoring sector. The headquarters of ONYX Insight's parent company, ONYX Insight Ltd, remains based in Derbyshire, United Kingdom.
The L&G digital infrastructure fund has also recently closed at £520m, marking a significant investment in the digital infrastructure sector. While not directly related to the acquisition, this news underscores the growing importance of digital technologies in various industries.
By becoming part of ONYX Insight, ELEVEN-I can now scale its mission globally, combining its deep technical expertise with ONYX Insight's industry-leading predictive analytics to enhance blade reliability worldwide. This acquisition is a significant step forward in the ongoing efforts to make wind energy a more reliable and cost-effective source of power.
