In a controversial move, the UK government has designated the pro-Palestinian group Palestine Action as a terrorist organisation under the 2000 anti-terrorism law. The designation, made in July 2025, has led to a wave of arrests and charges, with over 800 people detained and 138 individuals charged with supporting or inciting support for a terrorist organisation.

The charges carry a potential imprisonment of up to 14 years, as per the anti-terror law from 2000. Notably, the names of the 138 accused individuals have not been publicly disclosed.

The ban on Palestine Action has been met with criticism, particularly concerning the threat it poses to freedom of speech. Critics, including international human rights organisations such as the United Nations and Amnesty International, argue that the ban could stifle legitimate political discourse and activism.

The city of London saw a protest in response to the group's designation as a terrorist organisation. However, the protest could potentially lead to arrests for those participating in it, given the ban on membership or support of the group.

The group's activities have been controversial. Previously, members infiltrated a Royal Air Force base in southern England, spraying aircraft with red paint. This action, among others, has contributed to the group's designation.

The country of Palestine is involved in the context of the banned group and the criticism. Palestine Action has been known for its activism in support of Palestinian rights and against Israeli policies.

The designation of Palestine Action as a terrorist organisation has sparked debate and controversy, with some arguing that it is a necessary measure to combat extremism, while others contend that it infringes on fundamental rights and freedoms. The situation remains a topic of ongoing discussion and concern.
