Progress in biodiversity efforts reported as part of extensive Cornish renovation endeavor
The National Highways A30 Chiverton to Carland Cross project in Cornwall has officially begun, marking a significant step towards improving journey times and increasing safety on this busy route.
The project, which will create an 8.7-mile section of dual carriageway, has been prompted by the collapse of some sections of the road during the winter. The road design for the project is being carried out using locally quarried stone and local labour, ensuring a sustainable and authentic touch.
The project is predicted to result in a 20% net gain in biodiversity, with a focus on leaving a lasting legacy that will benefit the local ecology and environment. Nick Simmonds-Screech, the Project Director of National Highways, is particularly proud of the work being done to protect the area's wildlife.
As part of the project, thirty-three multi-species crossing points are being constructed for wildlife, including otters, badgers, bats, and reptiles. To ensure the safety of native species, a team of nationally recognized environment consultants from Truro-based Spalding Associates have rescued adders, grass snakes, slow worms, and common lizards from the heathland before it was cut into turfs.
Eight miles of traditional Cornish hedging are planned to be created as part of the project, with members of the Guild of Cornish Hedgers involved in the building work. Existing hedging and a section of property heathland habitat near Carland Cross will also be restored.
The project aims to address issues exacerbated by severe winter weather and promote economic growth. The organisation that donated £8 million for the construction of the new A30 route in Cornwall is not publicly specified. However, it is known that the project is partly funded by an £8m contribution from the European Regional Development Fund.
With the project's progression, the rescued animals were placed in a local animal shelter, ready to be reintroduced to their habitats once the construction is complete. The new route is expected to provide a significant boost to the region's economy and ensure a safer, more efficient journey for commuters.
