The city of Stoppenberg has taken a significant step forward in the redesign of Barbarossaplatz, with the architect firm bolwin.nagel architekten being awarded the commission for the project. The firm will be responsible for the planning services of performance phases 2 (preliminary design) and 3 (design planning).

The decision was made after the traffic and mobility committee approved planning services worth 350,000 euros for the redesign. This amount includes costs covered by urban development funding, which contributes 80% of the total costs, amounting to approximately 280,000 euros, and a municipal share of 70,000 euros. The city portal has also promised to commission the winning design and will contribute a 20% share for the planning costs.

The total costs for the planning of the Barbarossaplaz redesign are approximately 350,000 euros. However, the total costs for the project, which includes construction, are expected to be around 6.2 million euros. The final construction costs will be decided at a later date with a separate construction resolution.

The Barbarossaplaz redesign is a central component of the integrated development concept for the city district VI Zollverein, which was approved by the city council in 2020. The project was launched in 2024 through a realization competition for the development of design solutions for Barbarossaplaz and surrounding streets.

Further information about the Barbarossaplaz redesign project can be found in Attachment 0058/2025/6.
