In an unfortunate incident during the EuroBasket 2025 game between Lithuania and Germany, point guard Dennis Schröder faced racist heckling, specifically monkey noises from the stands. The game, which took place at the Nokia Arena in Tampere, Finland, ended with a score of 107:88 in favour of Germany.

The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) swiftly took action, identifying a suspect through video footage and excluding them from attending any further EuroBasket 2025 games. The German Basketball Federation (DBB) reported that two fans were ejected from the arena during the game for their part in the racist monkey noises.

Lithuania's players subsequently apologised to Schröder for the incident. It's worth noting that the heckling came from individual Lithuanian fans and not the players themselves.

The incident sparked a wave of solidarity. During the game against Britain, signs of support for Schröder were evident. Everyone held up their red cards on command before the game between Finland and World Cup winners Germany, with over 13,000 red cards with the inscription "Stop racism" distributed among spectators at the Nokia Arena.

The FIBA and host Finland showed their solidarity with Schröder at the end of the group stage in Tampere. Schröder himself expressed his disapproval, stating that monkey noises are a step too far and that racism has no place in this sport.

It's important to note that the game between Lithuania and Britain, where the red cards were distributed, was a separate match from the one where Schröder reported racist heckling. The game between Lithuania and Britain took place on a different day.

The incident serves as a reminder of the need for continued efforts to combat racism in sports. Schröder's courage in speaking out against the heckling is commendable and highlights the importance of standing against such behaviour.
