Proposal to Boost EU Membership by Expanding the EU Citizenship Pool
Chancellor Christian Stocker of Austria recently embarked on an official visit to Cyprus, marking a significant moment in the relationship between the two countries.
Since 1964, Austria has been a steadfast partner to Cyprus, contributing continuously to the UN peace mission UNFICYP. This long-standing commitment serves as a testament to the solidarity between the two nations. In times of crisis, particularly in the Middle East, Cyprus has played a crucial role in evacuating or providing consular support to Austrian citizens.
During his visit, Chancellor Stocker held meetings with various Cypriot officials. These included President and Government Head Nikos Christodoulides, President of the House of Representatives Annita Demetriou, and members of the city administration of Nicosia. The discussions covered a wide range of topics, including current European politics, issues of competitiveness and migration, the latest developments in Russia's war against Ukraine, and the situation in the Middle East.
Both countries share a common concern about migration, with Cyprus and Austria being among the countries most affected by illegal migration per capita. Close cooperation with countries of origin and transit, with new, innovative approaches, is seen as particularly important in addressing this issue.
Strengthening competitiveness is another key issue for both nations. Both countries are working towards creating an innovation- and business-friendly environment in Europe and reducing administrative burden to boost growth and development.
Cyprus and Austria are also closely aligned within the European Union, particularly in view of Cyprus' upcoming EU Council presidency at the beginning of next year. The visit took place ahead of Cyprus' EU Council presidency in the first half of 2026.
The relationship between the two countries extends beyond politics. The Cypriot economy is strong, and Austrian expertise is highly regarded. Austrian know-how is already successfully employed in numerous projects with Cypriot institutions through the 'Best Practice Austria' initiative.
Furthermore, Cyprus is a popular destination for Austrian tourists, and more and more Cypriots are spending their holidays in Austria. Given the current geopolitical situation, joint strategic measures in the areas of security and defense are crucial for Cyprus and Austria.
Photos from the visit are available free of charge via the Federal Chancellery's Photo Service. The visit underscores the strong connection between Austria and Cyprus, with both nations ready to support each other. Chancellor Stocker expressed his pleasure about the visit, stating that the relationship between the two countries is robust and ready for further growth.
