Proposed monetary compensation for tree cutting by the Mayor of Yakutsk
In a bid to preserve the city's green spaces, Yakutsk Mayor Evgeny Grigoryev has proposed a mechanism for compensatory planting of green areas in Yakutsk. This proposal was initially put forward during a business trip to the Republic of Tatarstan, where a similar practice is already in place for projects that destroy green elements.
The proposal, if accepted, will require contractors who destroy green elements to compensate for the planting in full. The contractor responsible for felling trees on Khabarov Street in Yakutsk, RIK Avtodor, will be among those affected by this new measure.
The Yakutsk City Hall will prepare the appropriate regulatory framework for this mechanism. The contractor will be issued a notice to restore the felled forest vegetation in the ratio of 50 plants for each felled tree. Contractors will also be responsible for monitoring the survival of the new plants for up to three years.
Municipal services will monitor the implementation of this mechanism, including with photo-fixing, to ensure compliance. Fines will be imposed if the new plants do not survive.
The decision to implement this mechanism may be made at the next session of the Yakutsk City Duma. The practice of compensation for green spaces in the Republic of Tatarstan was introduced by the local government authorities of Tatarstan.
This mechanism includes a maintenance period of up to three years for contractors who cause felling. If the mayor's proposal is accepted, contractors who commit similar violations will be obliged to monitor the survival of the new trees for a period of three years.
Evgeny Grigoryev shared this proposal as a means to promote environmental responsibility among contractors and foster a greener city for the people of Yakutsk.
