In a thrilling Bundesliga season opener, 1. FC Union Berlin secured a 2-1 victory over VfB Stuttgart. The match, refereed by Robert Hartmann, was not without its dramas, with a temporary halt due to confetti covering the penalty area in front of Union goalkeeper Frederik Rönnow.
The first half saw Ilyas Ansah, a German striker who joined Union from SC Paderborn in June 2025, score a brace on his Bundesliga debut. His first goal, a powerful volley, came in the 24th minute, and he added another in added time at the end of the first half, scoring his second goal at 45+1.
Union's second goal came in a quick attack in added time, with Ansah once again finding the back of the net. The Berlin-based team showed their ability to finish attacks when it mattered most, causing further trouble for VfB Stuttgart after the summer controversy surrounding Nick Woltemade and the Supercup defeat against FC Bayern.
Stuttgart's only goal came from Tiago Tomás in the 86th minute, reducing the deficit to 2-1. However, despite Tomás's efforts, Stuttgart couldn't find a way back into the game. Deniz Undav, Ermedin Demirovic, and Woltemade had no luck in front of goal for Stuttgart, with Rönnow making saves from Josha Vagnoman (31) and Atakan Karazor (44).
In a bizarre turn of events, a goal by Woltemade in added time was disallowed for offside (90+6). The game was resumed after the confetti was cleared with leaf blowers, and Union let the opponent have the ball and closed the spaces when leading.
The victory for 1. FC Union Berlin marks a perfect start to their Bundesliga season, while VfB Stuttgart began their campaign with a loss, despite returning player Tiago Tomás scoring. It's important to note that the DFB Cup was won by VfB Stuttgart in the previous season.
Ilyas Ansah, with his impressive debut performance, will be a key player for 1. FC Union Berlin as they continue their journey in the Bundesliga. His journey through youth clubs including SC Lüdenscheid, VfL Bochum, Eintracht Dortmund, Sportfreunde Siegen, and SC Paderborndemonstrates his dedication and hard work in the sport.
