Germany's Development Budget Reallocation: A Focus on Essentials and Global Concerns

The German Bundestag is set to vote on the budget for the current year mid-month, with the details of the allocation for global initiatives such as the food program and the fight against polio yet to be specified.

Amidst this budget reallocation, the UN World Food Programme will receive 22 million euros more than planned by the federal government, while the fight against polio will receive an additional 10 million euros. However, the exact amount allocated for these global programs remains undisclosed.

The responsible budget politician for this matter, Felix Doering, has not mentioned any specific reallocation of funds or any changes in the budget for the development ministry, which stands at approximately 10.3 billion euros for the year 2025. Despite this, the austerity course for the development ministry remains in place for 2025, as per the coalition agreement's commitment to comprehensive savings.

Union budget spokesman Christian Haase has emphasised a focus on essentials in development cooperation. He clarifies that turning a blind eye to global concerns is not the intention, but the SPD's stance on development funding is in contrast to this focus on essentials. The SPD continues to advocate for better funding of the development budget.

The current Development Minister, Sophie Alabali-Radovan, has seen a reallocation of 70 million euros from her budget. The Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development, who allocated approximately 10.3 billion euros for development cooperation in the 2025 budget, was Svenja Schulze (SPD), serving until May 2025.

Haase does not provide specific details about how essentials will be prioritized within the development budget. The SPD's stance on this matter is yet to be clarified.

The budget for the year 2025 is around 940 million euros less than the previous year, indicating a general trend towards savings. The Bundestag's vote on the budget will provide more insight into the specifics of Germany's development funding for the year.
