Prostate cancer has been diagnosed in the renowned tennis player, Björn Borg.
Björn Borg, the six-time French Open and five-time Wimbledon champion, has revealed in his upcoming memoir that he is battling an "extremely aggressive" form of prostate cancer. The news was first reported by the Swedish tabloid "Aftonbladet" before the book's scheduled release on September 18, 2023.
Born in 1956 in Södertälje, Sweden, Borg retired from professional tennis for the first time in 1981 at the age of 25 and briefly returned to the court in 1991. His memoir, titled "Heartbeats: A Memoir," co-written with his third wife, Patricia Östfeld, will be published under strict secrecy and will not be made available to reviewers in advance.
The book is set for release in several countries, including Sweden, the US, UK, Australia, New Zealand, Spain, Latin America, the Netherlands, and Italy. However, Borg has given very few interviews in connection with the publication of his memoir, choosing to keep the focus on his revealing account of his life and career.
The illness of Björn Borg was also confirmed by a person from the publishing house, and Amazon Italy's book description states that Björn Borg is currently battling cancer. Despite his illness, Borg was last seen on Ibiza with Boris Becker and his pregnant wife Lilian de Carvalho Monteiro. Becker captioned the photo with Björn Borg as "Beautiful days with friends who are like family."
Björn Borg's career highlights include winning a total of eleven Grand Slam titles, six French Open titles, and five Wimbledon titles in a row. His memoir promises to offer a unique insight into his life, both on and off the tennis court.
Björn Borg (69) is not the first athlete to battle cancer. His diagnosis serves as a reminder of the importance of regular health checks and early detection. Our thoughts are with him and his family during this challenging time.
