Protected Weapon Area Walkways: Regulation and Access
In Hanau, Germany, the police have stepped up their efforts to enforce weapons control regulations, following a recent incident where a 23-year-old resident was found in possession of a prohibited switchblade in Castle Park.
Since August 1, 2025, a permanent weapons ban platform zone has been established in the Hanau city centre, covering large parts of the city, including Freedom Square, Market Square, Forum Hanau, Castle Garden, numerous side streets, passages, and squares.
Thomas Leipold, a spokesperson from the Police Presidium Osthessen, explained the importance of these controls. He stated that rules only have an effect if they are enforced, and that the controls ensure the weapons ban platform zone is not just on paper or signs, but noticeable in everyday life.
On Thursday evening, deployment forces were on foot patrol in the city centre, specifically in the areas of Freedom Square, Market Square, and Castle Park. A total of 24 people were controlled during the patrol. In the incident at Castle Park, the police secured the switchblade and initiated an administrative offense procedure against the Hanau resident.
