Protesters voice opposition to domestication of meerkats

In a growing concern for wildlife conservation, animal welfare organisations in Taiwan are advocating for a ban on private ownership of meerkats. The lack of clear regulations in the country has the potential to stimulate the market, leading to an increase in cases of improper care.

The proposed ban is seen as a necessary measure to prevent the problem from escalating. If meerkats are abandoned or escape, they could potentially harm the environment, disrupting the delicate balance of Taiwan's ecosystem.

Before the ban is instated, the Ministry of Agriculture is urged to formulate regulations to ensure they are implemented effectively and to protect the rights of current owners. During the transition period, meerkat owners should report their animals' numbers and health, accept government supervision, and be prohibited from breeding or selling them.

The groups are also calling for better education about the needs of wild animals and a focus on ecological responsibility rather than animals' cute appearances. Many countries, including Belgium, the Netherlands, Italy, Portugal, and several US states, have already prohibited private ownership of meerkats.

The government acknowledges that it cannot fully supervise private meerkat ownership, and if pet meerkats end up in the wild, the subsequent costs could be unimaginable. To address this, the ministry should bolster border controls to prevent illegal meerkat trade and new meerkats from entering the country.

Recently, animal welfare organisations criticised the Ministry of Agriculture's proposal to classify meerkats as a "gray" species in the black, white, and gray list categories. However, the specific organisations involved and the details of their criticism are not yet clear.

In conclusion, the call for a ban on private meerkat ownership in Taiwan is a significant step towards protecting wildlife and the environment. By implementing stricter regulations and fostering a culture of ecological responsibility, Taiwan can ensure the well-being of its native species and preserve its natural habitats for future generations.
