Psychiatric research in Bottrop marks its 50th anniversary with a week-long celebration

In October 2025, the city of Bottrop will host a special event to commemorate a significant milestone in the history of mental health care in Germany. The Psychiatric Inquiry of 1975, a turning point in the nation's psychosocial development, will be celebrated as a festival week from October 6th to 15th.

The opening ceremony, scheduled for October 6th at 10 am in the Chamber Concert Hall, will feature specialist lectures, personal accounts, and a panel discussion. This event will mark the beginning of a week-long festival aimed at creating spaces for encounters, information, and exchange about mental health issues.

The Psychiatric Inquiry, a milestone in Germany's history, initiated a fundamental reform of psychiatry and set an important sign for more humanity in psychiatric care. It exposed abuses in psychiatric care and demanded fundamental changes, leading to a shift towards outpatient-oriented care. The Inquiry aimed to provide more dignified care for people with mental illnesses.

Throughout the week, various institutions in Bottrop will open their doors to provide insights into their work on mental health. Participating organizations include BSG Institute for Social and Health Education GmbH, Diakonisches Werk Gladbeck-Bottrop-Dorsten, St. Antonius Hospital Bottrop-Kirchhellen, Caritas Association of the City of Bottrop, Valeara Bottrop GmbH, Evangelical Social Advice, and ParitΓ€tischer.

The festival week coincides with World Mental Health Day on October 10th, 2025, making it a perfect opportunity to raise awareness and foster conversations about mental health. All interested parties are warmly invited to attend the festival week.

The leaders of the participating organizations during the Psychiatry Memorial Week in Bottrop from October 6 to 15, 2025, are not publicly listed at this time.

As Germany looks back on 50 years of the Psychiatric Inquiry, it is clear that this event played a crucial role in shaping modern mental health care in the country. The festival week is intended as a platform for remembering and exchanging ideas about mental health, as well as a celebration of the progress that has been made in the field.
