Public Informative Campaign Launch in Essen 51
The city of Essen is set to unveil a major urban development project, the Essen 51 Quarter, which will address the urgent housing demand and bring about a vibrant new community. The development plan for this quarter will be published from mid-September to mid-October 2025.
The Essen 51 Quarter will span over 4.2 hectares of residential, 9 hectares of mixed-use, and 11 hectares of commercial space. It will feature 1,700 residential units, high-quality office and commercial spaces, and an elementary school.
In addition to residential and commercial spaces, the project will also include comprehensive infrastructure. Access to the city train will be possible via three new stops (Zeche Amalie, Zollstraße, Bergmühle). Several kindergartens, public facilities, and a city train station are also part of the plan.
The quarter will boast extensive traffic measures on 6.2 hectares of traffic areas. The new construction of the West tangent and the South spur, the former Zollstraße, will be implemented. The main cycle route connection between the regional cycle routes RS1 Radschnellweg Ruhr in the south and Mittleres Ruhrgebiet in the north will be closed during this process.
The Essen 51 Quarter will not only be a hub for living and services but also for local supply. Green spaces will be a significant part of the quarter, with a total of 4.8 hectares of green and water areas extending across it.
All interested parties are invited to a public information event to take a closer look at the plans and exchange ideas with representatives of the city, Ruhrbahn, and Thelen Holding GmbH. The event will take place on Tuesday, August 26th, at 6 PM, at the Kunst und Architektur Forum, Kopstadtplatz 12.
