Q4 2024 Transport Sector Labor Report: Slowing Growth in Transportation Industry, Wages Remain Stagnant

In the realm of employment, the logistics and transportation sectors have shown a mix of growth and decline as we move into 2025.

According to recent data, logistics support job postings have experienced a 5.9% increase from the previous year, reaching a level that is still 10.8% above the pre-pandemic baseline. Despite this growth, employer demand has weakened, reflecting a stabilising but still active job market.

On the other hand, loading and stocking postings have seen a different trend. They are now just 4.8% above the pre-pandemic baseline, having steadily declined since the start of the year. This indicates a slowing demand for workers in these specific roles.

The overall job market, as represented by the Indeed Job Posting Index, has seen a decrease of 8.3% from the same date last year. This decline, which was 8.3% from January 17, 2024, to January 17, 2025, has affected various industries, not just logistics and transportation.

In the transportation sector, driving job postings have seen a 3.6% decline over the past year. However, these postings remain 37.6% above their pre-pandemic level, suggesting a persistent need for drivers. Wages in the driving sector have stagnated in the second half of the year, with no growth reported in December 2024.

The wage growth trends for driving and loading & stocking roles mirror the weakening demand for workers in these sectors. The rate of wage growth for driving has remained stagnant, while loading & stocking wage growth has slowed consistently throughout the year and currently sits at 2.1%, significantly lower than the labor market average.

Looking at the European market, specifically Germany, the logistics sector has seen a dominance by companies such as Deutsche Post DHL, Deutsche Bahn (including DB Schenker before its sale), Dachser, and Kรผhne + Nagel. These companies have been the most active in job advertisements within the logistics support sector.

Lastly, the aviation sector has seen a 22.2% decline in job postings over the past year. This could be indicative of the ongoing challenges faced by the aviation industry due to various factors, including the lingering effects of the pandemic.

As we move forward, it will be interesting to see how these trends evolve and how they might impact the job market in the coming months.
