Lewis Hamilton has been handed a penalty at the Dutch Grand Prix following an incident during practice laps before the race start. The seven-time World Champion was found guilty of disregarding double yellow flags, a breach of Article 44.1 of the sporting regulations.

The affected section of the track at Zandvoort was permanently under double yellow during the 'reconnaissance laps.' Hamilton entered this section with a speed 20 km/h lower than his usual pace during free practice, but the stewards did not consider this reduction to be significant under double yellow flags.

Hamilton attempted to reduce his speed by reducing his throttle use by 10 to 20 percent and braking 70 meters earlier than usual during the incident. However, the stewards deemed this effort as insufficient.

As a result, Hamilton will move back five places on the starting grid for the Italian GP. Additionally, he received a penalty of half the normal grid demotion, as well as two penalty points on his FIA superlicense.

The steward who penalized Hamilton has not been specified in the available search results. Race director Rui Marques announced this penalty to minimize potential hazards at the pit entrance.

This is not the first time a driver has been penalized for disregarding double yellow flags. Lando Norris, Hamilton's rival, was given a ten-second stop-and-go penalty at the Qatar GP last year for a similar infraction. The disregard of double yellow flags can potentially endanger unprotected persons such as track marshals.

The penalty comes at a crucial time for Hamilton, who is currently battling for the championship lead. The incident occurred in the final corner of the track, potentially costing him valuable track position.

Elsewhere, Lando Norris' disregard of double yellows cost McLaren valuable points in their constructors' championship fight. The team will be hoping for a cleaner weekend in Italy to maintain their position in the championship standings.
