Race attendance restricted by German Federation due to a ban on spectators
During the EuroBasket game between Germany and Lithuania in Tampere, a disturbing incident occurred that has since been addressed by the governing body of basketball, FIBA.
German national team captain, Dennis Schröder, reported racist heckling from the stands after the game. Schröder stated that monkey noises were made by some Lithuanian fans during the match. He strongly condemned the incident, asserting that racism has no place in sports.
The German coaching staff alerted security about the monkey noises from Lithuanian fans during halftime. In response, two individuals were ejected from the arena.
FIBA has taken swift action to address the incident. They identified the individual responsible for the racist heckling using video footage and have banned them from attending any further EuroBasket 2022 games.
In addition, FIBA has contacted the Lithuanian delegation regarding the incident, expressing disapproval and sharing relevant footage and information with the authorities. FIBA also plans to contact the Lithuanian team delegation to inform them of the situation and support efforts to prevent similar incidents in future games.
It is not clear if the Lithuanian team has taken any official action regarding the incident. The German Basketball Federation (DBB) has been involved in the incident, providing information to FIBA.
It is not stated whether the ejected individuals are the same as the one previously identified by FIBA. The game ended with a score of 107:88 in favour of Germany, but the final score does not seem to have been affected by the incident.
This is not the first time that incidents of racism have been reported in sports, underscoring the need for continuous efforts to eradicate such behaviour. FIBA's swift action serves as a reminder that such incidents will not be tolerated in the world of basketball.
