Vingegaard Takes Over Race Lead in Vuelta a España

After an action-packed Stage 10 of the Vuelta a España, Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike) has regained the race lead from Torstein Træen (Bahrain Victorious).

The stage, which spanned 170km from Sendaviva to Larra Belagua in the Pyrenees, saw a number of attacks and breakaways. Alec Segaert (Lotto) made a solo attack early on, leading a smaller group of 10 riders, including Jay Vine (UAE Team Emirates XRG), Pablo Castrillo (Movistar), and others.

Bahrain Victorious took control of the chase, keeping the gap below 90 seconds until the Alto de las Coronas. However, Javier Romo (Movistar) made a move midway into the ascent, extending the gap to 2:30.

Meanwhile, the larger group was caught by the Almeida/Vingegaard group, with Segaert eventually caught by Castrillo with 7.5km to climb.

The race heated up on the final climb of the stage, with Vingegaard securing the lead, finishing 26 seconds ahead of Træen. Træen lost 1:03 on the day and now lies second overall at 26 seconds.

Jay Vine, who was part of the early breakaway, soloed to the summit of the Puerto de Belagua to win the stage, with Romo remaining clear at the summit to take the maximum points. Vine held onto his lead to win the stage over Castrillo.

Tom Pidcock (Q36.5 Pro Cycling) moved into fourth overall, 58 seconds behind Vingegaard, while João Almeida (UAE Team Emirates XRG) is third overall, 38 seconds behind the new race leader.

The stage was also a successful one for UAE Team Emirates-XRG, who won their fourth stage of the race and their 80th race of the season.

In the mountains classification, Jay Vine currently leads by 23 points over Louis Vervaeke (Soudal-QuickStep). The race continues tomorrow with Stage 11, a 193km stage from Larra Belagua to Pampelune.
