Rainstorms Wreak Havoc on Jammu & Kashmir Transportation, Railways Cancel Multiple Trains
Heavy Monsoon Affects Travel and Tourism in Jammu and Kashmir
Unpredictable weather conditions in Jammu and Kashmir have led to several challenges for travellers and tourists in the region. The monsoon season has been particularly severe this year, causing heavy rainfall and resulting in landslides and flash floods.
On August 28, Jammu recorded 380 mm of rainfall, the heaviest since 1910. This has caused significant damage to the Pathankot-Jammu railway line, leading to the cancellation of 68 trains until September 30. However, authorities are gradually restoring service, with 24 trains, including the Sampark Kranti, Sealdah Express, Kantri Express, Trivandrum Express, and the Vande Bharat (resuming September 7), being restored.
The Vaishno Devi pilgrimage in Jammu and Kashmir has been suspended for a week due to a landslide on the pilgrimage route, resulting in 35 deaths. This is the longest closure since the COVID-19 pandemic. A landslide near the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine in Katra claimed 34 lives.
For those heading north, it is advised to keep backup plans handy due to the uncertain weather conditions. Those travelling for pilgrimage are encouraged to keep plans flexible and stay updated with official advisories.
The heavy rainfall has also affected highways in the region, which are open but prone to waterlogging and occasional landslides. If travel to Jammu is non-essential, especially for families with elderly members or young children, it may be safer to postpone the trip.
Authorities forecast additional rainfall in the region, and the India Meteorological Department (IMD) continues to issue warnings of intermittent showers, particularly across south Kashmir. Travellers are advised to monitor IMD forecasts and Northern Railway advisories before setting out and to be flexible with their travel plans.
Despite the challenges, the Union Minister predicts that tourism in Jammu and Kashmir will recover by the end of the year. Many hotels and homestays offer flexible cancellation policies to accommodate travellers' needs.
For those planning treks, extra caution is advised due to the unpredictable weather. It's important to prioritise safety and stay updated with official advisories.
In conclusion, while the weather in Jammu and Kashmir remains unpredictable, the region remains open for travel. Travellers are encouraged to be flexible with their plans, monitor weather forecasts, and prioritise safety.
