Rally for Enhanced Wolf Preservation Heads to Brocken
In the picturesque landscapes of Brandenburg, a group of advocates is taking a unique approach to protect one of its most elusive and valuable residents β the wolf. The "FREIE WΓHLER Fraktion" (Free Voters Group) from the Potsdam Landtag will embark on a run to the Brocken, starting from Monday, to advocate for stronger protection measures for wolves.
This action forms part of the "Alliance Wolf in Brandenburg," an alliance aiming to raise awareness about the "nature-hostile and undemocratic populist clientelism against the wolf." The group believes that wolves are an indispensable ecological key species and should not be included in the hunting law. Instead, they demand that wolves should not be shot at or hunted.
Their call for action comes amidst a long-standing conflict between the Ministry of Agriculture, nature conservation associations, and animal welfare organizations, regarding the handling of wolves. The Ministry of Agriculture will discuss the issue in a "Wolf Forum" with several associations in September.
One of the key demands of the advocates is the exclusion of wolves from the hunting law. They argue that wolves play a crucial role in maintaining the balance of the ecosystem and should not be targeted for sport. Moreover, they oppose a blanket culling quota for wolves, as proposed by some groups, and instead advocate for stricter protection.
The destination of the group's run is the Brocken, a well-known peak in the Harz Mountains. By running to the Brocken, the advocates aim to draw attention to their cause and gather support for their demand for stronger protection of wolves.
As the debate over the handling of wolves continues, it is clear that the issue is far from resolved. However, the actions of the "FREIE WΓHLER Fraktion" and the "Alliance Wolf in Brandenburg" serve as a reminder of the importance of protecting wildlife and the delicate balance of ecosystems.
