Rapid Journeys: Maintaining Weekend Travel Equilibrium
In a bid to enhance road safety, Euskirchen police recently conducted speed checks across their district as part of the left Rhine quality circle. Last weekend, these checks were carried out in various locations, including the B 266 at Schleiden-Vogelsang, the L 165 at Bad Münstereifel-Mahlberg, the L 113 at Bad Münstereifel-Bliesthal, and in the areas of Mechernich, Kall, and Blankenheim (L 115).
The purpose of these speed checks was not primarily for revenue generation, but to promote road safety and discourage dangerous driving behaviours. Compliance with speed limits is a shared responsibility among all road users, and those who adhere to these limits contribute significantly to road safety.
Unfortunately, during these checks, a total of 144 road users were found to be driving too fast. Two of the most egregious offenders were a motorcyclist, who was measured at a staggering 136 km/h in a 70 km/h zone, and a car driver, who was clocked at 126 km/h where the limit was 70 km/h. Such excessive speeding significantly increases the risk of accidents and is unacceptable.
Five drivers were issued a driving ban for significant excesses, underscoring the seriousness of the offences. It is crucial to stick to the prescribed speeds not just to avoid penalties, but more importantly, to prevent accidents and save lives.
Euskirchen police have made it clear that they will continue to regularly carry out speed checks in the future. These checks will be conducted as part of an inter-municipal cooperation agreement with the city of Euskirchen, involving mobile speed checks and the establishment of more "Tempo 30" zones.
Sticking to the speed limit is everyone's responsibility. Let's all do our part in ensuring our roads are safe for everyone.
