Raucous Celebration and Ambiance at Dahmen- and Holzgraven Streets

In the heart of Aachen, the inner-city district around Dahmen and Holzgraben has been experiencing a sense of renewal in recent years. This transformation is a result of collaborative efforts between the city, local traders, and owners, who have been working together since spring to improve the quality of life and attractiveness of the neighbourhood.

City manager Kai Hennes reported a significant change in the district since the first street conference in March 2025. The conference brought all parties to the table, including established and new traders, who have since joined forces as an interest group to pool their strengths and drive forward joint actions.

The city has bundled these measures in a cross-departmental "task force" for Dahmen and Holzgraben. The task force works together with local actors to strengthen the district, with specific initiatives such as activating vacant stores, installing new furniture, and promoting actions and temporary initiatives.

One of the most anticipated events in the district's renewal is the first street festival, which will take place on September 6, 2025, from 12 to 6 pm. The street community of traders around Dahmen and Holzgraben is hosting this event, offering attractions for all ages, including face painting, culinary delights, market stalls, and fun and games.

Horst Recker, owner of the "SONNENTOR" business and a spokesman for the community, has stated that there is an upward trend in the street, with new life and businesses moving into the neighbourhood. To further enhance the festive atmosphere, colorful lanterns and a large banner on the overhead lines have been installed, made possible by the city's "Oecher Perlen" fund.

In addition, the city's "Ladenliebe" funding program has supported four new openings, particularly on Dahmen. One of these new additions is the "Aachen Unverpackt" store, which will open on Dahmen in time for the street festival.

Looking forward, the city will improve Holzgraben square with new, high-quality seating islands and more greenery in the coming months. These improvements, along with the ongoing efforts of the community and the city, promise a bright future for the Dahmen and Holzgraben district.
