In a significant development in Thai politics, the Pheu Thai Party has declared Chaikasem Nitisiri as their candidate for the new prime minister. Chaikasem, a seasoned lawyer and politician, previously served as Attorney-General and Thai Minister of Justice.

The announcement comes after the Constitutional Court disqualified Paetongtarn Shinawatra from the premiership, leaving a power vacuum within the party. Chaikasem was a candidate for prime minister in 2025, nominated by the Pheu-Thai Party after Paetongtarn's dismissal. Despite not being elected prime minister in the parliamentary election on September 5, 2025, he has now been put forward once more.

The Pheu Thai Party asserts that Mr Chaikasem adheres to democratic principles and the rule of law. They believe he is ready for the job, a sentiment echoed in their recent Facebook post. The announcement seems to address concerns about Mr Chaikasem's health being suitable for the position of prime minister.

The announcement also challenges Bhumjaithai's promotion of Anutin Charnvirakul as their candidate for the prime ministership. Both Pheu Thai and Bhumjaithai are actively seeking the support of the People's Party due to their large number of votes. The People's Party, however, is yet to make a decision, holding a crucial meeting on Monday to decide which party they will back.

The House of Representatives will convene from Wednesday to Friday to vote on a successor for Ms Paetongtarn Shinawatra as prime minister. The race for power is heating up, with protesters gathering at Victory Monument on Sunday to oppose Pheu Thai's efforts to maintain power. The political landscape in Thailand continues to evolve, with the future of the country's leadership up in the air.
