Pro-Palestine Protest Camp Returns to Berlin's Chancellor's Office Grounds

After a brief hiatus, a pro-Palestine protest camp has re-emerged near the Chancellor's office in Berlin. The camp, which was previously dismantled by the police, is now allowed to be rebuilt in the Sculpture Park, following a successful court battle.

The camp had initially been classified as an assembly by the Higher Administrative Court of Berlin-Brandenburg (OVG), a decision that was upheld following an appeal by the police. The OVG's ruling came after the Administrative Court of Berlin continued to classify the camp as an assembly.

The camp's return to the grounds near the Chancellor's office comes amidst ongoing protests against Israel's actions in the Gaza Strip and Germany's Israel policy. In recent days, there have been "a whole range of assembly-like expression elements" at the camp.

The police had attempted to relocate the camp to the main station due to noise pollution concerns, but this order was overturned by the Administrative Court. The court also confirmed that the tents can be set up again near the Chancellor's office, but with the condition that the activists be quieter.

Despite the police's initial attempts to dismantle the camp, the participants complied, and the applicant went to court. The camp's organizers registered a new camp in the area of the Marx-Engels-Forum near the Red City Hall for today.

The protest camp at the sculpture park in front of the Chancellery was successfully defended in court by the lawyer Thorsten Stahl. The camp's mere presence at a politically significant place had already generated a certain expression effect, according to the Administrative Court.

However, the Mitte district office had objected to the further use of the green spaces and asked the residents to dismantle their tents and belongings. The police's appeal against the OVG's decision at the OVG was unsuccessful.

The camp near the Chancellor's office is a peaceful protest against the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, and it serves as a platform for voices advocating for a change in Germany's Israel policy. The activists hope that their presence will bring attention to the plight of the Palestinians and encourage dialogue and action towards a peaceful resolution.
