In the upcoming October 2025 issue of Policy Matters, an intriguing article sheds light on the potential impact of strategic legal actions in accelerating and strengthening the mainstreaming of diverse values of nature.

Prof. Rossi, in his June 14, 2023 presentation, delved into the strategic use of the judiciary for climate policy goals, asserting it as a legitimate means to bring about systemic change through state institutions and instruments. This approach, he argued, could help challenge the status-quo and "reimagine relationships" with nature.

The article explains why and how strategic legal action is necessary and beneficial. It highlights examples of legal actions from around the world, each illustrating the potential impact in reshaping how we recognise the diverse values people hold for nature. These actions are suggested to have the potential to shape not only individual case outcomes, but also to gradually reshape societal attitudes towards nature.

The Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) encourages policy makers to engage with and recognise plural values for nature. However, integrating diverse values into mainstream policy processes remains challenging due to the dominant orthodoxy of instrumentalist values and economic valuation.

Strategic legal action, therefore, offers a promising avenue to challenge this orthodoxy and enable a more holistic approach to nature conservation and management. By recognising and upholding the diverse values that people hold for nature, these actions could help reshape our relationship with the environment, fostering a more sustainable and equitable future for all.

The article serves as a call to action for policy makers, legal professionals, and the general public to engage with this approach and explore its potential in shaping a more sustainable world. Stay tuned for the next issue of Policy Matters to delve deeper into this compelling topic.
