Reduction of drug addicts in Astana by 8% reported
A meeting chaired by Astana's Deputy Akim, Erik Meirkhanov, was held to discuss countering drug addiction and drug trafficking in the city. The gathering was part of the "Law and Order" narrative and followed instructions from President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.
Over 400 events to counter and prevent drug addiction have been held in Astana this year, covering all age groups. This marks a significant increase in events compared to previous years.
The number of newly registered cases this year is lower than in the previous two years. In fact, this year, only 34 new cases of drug addiction were registered, including 19 synthetic drug users. This decrease indicates that the current treatment and preventive work is yielding results, according to Aliya Rustemova, the head of Astana's Department of Public Health.
Rustemova noted that the decrease in the number of newly registered cases is largely due to low medical assistance-seeking behavior. Many patients prefer to seek anonymous help in private clinics, but the current legislation does not provide a mechanism for information transfer from private organizations.
As of today, 891 people are registered in the city for drug addiction, which is 8% less than last year. This drop in numbers is a positive sign in Astana's ongoing battle against drug addiction.
Meanwhile, the implementation of the "Astana - City Without Drugs" plan was discussed at the meeting. However, it was not mentioned as being updated or replaced in the new plan that the heads of state bodies were tasked with preparing for 2026-2028.
The new plan will include specific, realistic measures to prevent and counter drug addiction and drug trafficking. Details about the specific names or titles of officials involved in preparing the new plan remain undisclosed.
Deputy Akim of Astana, Erik Meirkhanov, emphasized the importance of long-term, systematic, and comprehensive preventive work in countering drug addiction and drug trafficking. He reiterated the need for continuous efforts to ensure a safer and healthier city for all its residents.
