Reflecting on her professional journey, Franziska van Almsick states unequivocally: 'No regrets marked my career path'

Franziska van Almsick, the 47-year-old former swimmer who became an icon of reunified Germany, is the subject of a new ARD documentary titled "Being Franziska van Almsick." The documentary, which recaps her illustrious career and includes archive footage and emotional memories, will be available on ARD Mediathek from September 4 and on ARD from September 9.

Van Almsick, who won Olympic silver at the age of 14, has maintained a positive relationship with the media despite experiencing pushback in the past. This pushback came after an interview in 1995 where she spoke about German history, for which she was criticised and started giving long-winded answers as a form of self-defense.

However, Van Almsick feels no reason to hold a grudge against the media and continues to participate in media appearances. She tries to connect with the media in the right places but avoids discussing gossip or things she has nothing to do with.

The documentary has been an enjoyable experience for Van Almsick, who found it challenging but rewarding to revisit her past. She believes her experiences as a media superstar have helped her find her personal way and lead a more private life.

Van Almsick has great charity projects and is on the supervisory board of the German Sports Aid. She also has her own foundation, focusing on the importance of swimming lessons for children. Van Almsick feels that when she speaks up about swimming lessons, more people listen to her than to other important people who also have a lot to say about this topic.

Despite her success, Van Almsick's children remain private and are not known to the public. She feels at peace with her career and has no regrets. Van Almsick became an icon of reunified Germany, winning several world records, European, and World Championship titles.

The documentary will undoubtedly have a significant impact on athletes and young people in the German media, as Van Almsick's story continues to inspire and motivate. It serves as a reminder of her resilience, determination, and the ability to overcome adversity.
