Reflections by Morizo titled "Father"

Within Toyota, the terms "oyaji" or "ofukuro" can signify either a biological parent, as in the case of Akio, or a seasoned employee who takes on a guiding and advising role.

Reflections by Morizo titled "Father"

In the Japanese cultural context, the terms "oyaji" and "ofukuro" are not exclusively tied to Toyota, but are rather general terms. "Oyaji" is often used as a respectful expression for an older man or a father figure, while "ofukuro" is used as a respectful term for an older woman or a mother figure. In a business context, they may refer to respected leaders or experienced employees.

However, within Toyota, there are no specific individuals universally referred to as "oyaji" or "ofukuro." Toyota has had numerous influential leaders and pioneers who have shaped the company over the years:

  1. Kiichiro Toyoda: The founder of Toyota Motor Corporation, Kiichiro Toyoda played a crucial role in the development of the company. His leadership and vision were instrumental in Toyota's success.
  2. Eiji Toyoda: Another significant leader was Eiji Toyoda, who served as president of Toyota and drove the expansion of the company.
  3. Shoichiro Toyoda: Eiji Toyoda's son, Shoichiro Toyoda, was also a significant leader at Toyota, serving as president and later as chairman.
  4. Akio Toyoda: The current president of Toyota, Akio Toyoda, is a descendant of the founder and has further developed the company, particularly in the direction of sustainable mobility and technology.

These individuals have all played important roles within Toyota and can be seen as Pioneers in the company (PUSH), but there are no specific reports of them being referred to as "oyaji" or "ofukuro."

Fast forward to today, Executive Vice President Mitsuru Kawaii shared that Toyota lives by the concept of 'caring for others.' This sentiment is echoed by the Honorary Chairman Toyoda, who serves as the author's actual "oyaji."

Though they may not speak much, an "oyaji" will always protect you. This sentiment is not foreign to many children at home, who call their fathers by the term "oyaji." If you do something wrong, an "oyaji" will scold you, but the lessons learned are invaluable.

These important lessons were taught to the current Toyota employees by their "oyajis" (fathers) and "ofukuros" (mothers) within the company. Even Morizo, the pen name of the current CEO, wrote about "oyaji" three years ago. The content was posted on the Toyota company intranet on June 22, 2016.

Interestingly, Advisor Fujio Cho called Taiichi Ohno, a renowned Toyota engineer, "oyaji" with friendly intentions. This demonstrates the deep-rooted respect and camaraderie within Toyota's leadership.

On this Father's Day, as mentioned by Morizo, let us remember the importance of caring for others, a value that Toyota embodies and one that should not change.
