In an effort to ensure safer and more efficient chemistry work, [ProjectsInFlight] has recently completed a remarkable project: the restoration of a used fume hood and the creation of a custom lab rack.

The journey began when a chemical incident prompted [ProjectsInFlight] to seek a fume hood. Recognising the high costs associated with new equipment, they turned to the used market, where they found a fume hood that was destined for the scrap heap. For just $200, they were able to purchase the fume hood and give it a new lease of life.

To get the fume hood working, some LED lighting and cleaning were required. Additionally, a high flow rate fan was added to the fume hood restoration to ensure optimal performance. It's worth noting that companies are obligated by OSHA and the EPA to clean their fume hoods before removal, making [ProjectsInFlight]'s diligence all the more commendable.

The lab rack, a ladder-like device with numerous mounting points for clamps, was designed with safety and ease of use in mind. Inspired by a gold nonparticipant fabrication hack, the lab rack was crafted using a lathe. To keep costs down, polyurethane was used instead of solid epoxy for the work top. A table was built for the hood, featuring an acrylic painted plywood work surface.

The lab rack includes machined chilled water and vacuum inlet ports, making it a valuable asset for any lab. The fume hood, now restored and integrated with the lab rack, ensures no leakage of fumes, providing a safer environment for chemistry work.
