Regulation Implementation Acts to be Adopted, Specifying the Use of This Legislation
In August 2025, Germany witnessed a significant change in its car registration trends. A total of 207,229 passenger cars were newly registered, marking a 5.0 percent increase compared to the previous year.
Among these new registrations, electric-powered vehicles saw a notable surge, accounting for 19.0 percent of the total. The average CO2 emissions of these newly registered electric cars decreased by 10.9 percent, reaching an average of 105.0 g/km.
The top-selling electric cars in Germany were primarily manufactured by Volkswagen. The Volkswagen ID.7 led as the most popular model, followed by the ID.4, ID.5, and ID.3. Other popular electric cars included the Škoda Enyaq and Cupra Born. Interestingly, Tesla's Model Y fell to eleventh place in new registrations.
The shift towards electric vehicles was also reflected in the decrease of gasoline-powered vehicles. The number of newly registered gasoline-powered vehicles decreased by 18.2 percent, accounting for 27.6 percent of the total.
On the other hand, hybrids and plug-in hybrids saw a significant increase in registrations. A total of 82,578 hybrids were newly registered, with a 19.1 percent increase and a share of 39.8 percent. Additionally, 23,973 plug-in hybrids were newly registered, which increased by 76.7 percent and accounted for 11.6 percent.
The share of diesel-powered cars in the registration statistics also decreased, standing at 13.1 percent after a decrease of 9.2 percent.
