Remains discovered in Lake Como identified as missing German individual

In the picturesque surroundings of Lake Como, two heart-wrenching incidents have occurred, causing a "huge shock" in the region, as mentioned by Mayor Hubert Schnurr. Both incidents involved individuals who were caught in a current and drowned.

In July 2024, a 55-year-old man from the Baden-Württemberg town of Bühl, Germany, lost his life while trying to save his children. The family was enjoying a day on the water near Dorio, a popular spot on the eastern shore of Lake Como, when the children fell overboard from a rented boat. The man jumped into the water to rescue them, but he disappeared underwater.

The search for the man was further complicated by adverse weather conditions. Despite the challenges, his body was eventually found at a depth of approximately 220 meters by a remotely operated underwater vehicle. The lake, with a maximum depth of over 400 meters, is one of the deepest in Europe, making such incidents particularly dangerous.

The man's body was subsequently brought up to the surface by two divers and made available to the relevant authorities for necessary examinations. Unfortunately, the man was not known widely in Bühl before the incident, as he was primarily recognised as a restaurateur and organizer of after-work parties.

Fast forward to the present, another tragic incident has unfolded. On Monday, a 51-year-old man from Germany rented a boat near Dorio, another popular spot among German tourists on the eastern shore of Lake Como. His two children fell overboard, and he jumped into the water to save them. However, it is suspected that the man was caught in a current and drowned.

Particularly in the northern part of Lake Como, changing winds can generate strong waves. This factor, combined with the lake's depth, can make swimming and boating hazardous activities.

These incidents serve as a stark reminder for swimmers and boaters to exercise caution and respect the power of the water. Always wear a life jacket, stay aware of weather conditions, and never swim or boat alone. Let's cherish the beauty of Lake Como while ensuring our safety.
