In the heart of North Hesse, Our City and Schauenburg have embarked on a significant journey towards flood resilience. The journey began in the summer of 2017 with the inauguration of the flood retention basin at Hunsrückstraße in Kirchbauna, marking the final piece in the comprehensive flood protection measures.

This extensive project, costing approximately 17 million euros, saw 70% of the costs covered by funding. The initiative was a collaborative effort between Our City, Schauenburg, and experts from the Department of Water Engineering and Water Management at the University of Kassel.

The need for such measures was underscored by the century flood that occurred 33 years ago in the Bauna Valley, causing extensive damage estimated at around 6.5 million euros. The disaster prompted the Association for Wastewater Disposal and Flood Protection to develop a flood protection concept, which received great attention at the World's Fair EXPO in 2000 and has been consistently implemented since then.

Key components of the concept include the Polder Schefferfeld near Altenritte and the retention basin Katzenmühle. These measures, aimed at controlling floodwaters, have been instrumental in safeguarding Our City and Schauenburg from future disasters.

The combined heat and power plant of the Max-Riegel-Hall in Our City was among the facilities severely affected by the flood. More than 100 firefighters worked tirelessly for over 22 hours to rescue people and animals during the flood, with the wave reaching up to two meters high and sweeping away everything in its path.

Despite the challenges, Our City and Schauenburg have shown resilience in the face of adversity, demonstrating that comprehensive flood protection measures can make a significant difference in protecting communities and infrastructure from future disasters.
