Renovated and expanded health center in Friedrichshain now open for public usage
Friedrichshain Health Center Undergoes Comprehensive Renovation and Expansion
The Friedrichshain Health Center in Berlin is set for a significant transformation, with a focus on integrating the new facility into the surrounding quarter and creating a close connection with the public space. The winning design, a collaboration between TREIBHAUS Landscape Architecture - Hamburg and Argus Stadt und Verkehr, aims to achieve this goal.
Pedevilla Architects, the organization responsible for the public space design around the health center, have incorporated an interdisciplinary early support center with an intercultural approach into the new facility. This center will complement the existing services offered at the health center.
The renovation has resulted in a variety of improvements, including a new entrance, visitor guidance system, and a colorful design on all floors. Barrier-free access and Braille signage have been introduced to facilitate orientation in the renovated health center.
In addition to these changes, the health center will feature a planned environmental medicine outpatient clinic addressing health problems caused by noise, air pollution, or heat. The counseling center for hearing-impaired children and young people has also been expanded and equipped with audiometry cabins.
The health center will offer new low-threshold services starting in September 2025, including programs for early help such as for parents with colicky babies, counseling for young people with psychosocial problems, and help for older people with social and health difficulties.
The renovation of the Friedrichshain health department was funded by the "Special Infrastructure Fund for Growing Cities" and the "Urban Redevelopment" program. The existing trees will be preserved, and new climate-resistant and insect-friendly plants will be added to the green spaces.
A notable change coming in 2026 is the transformation of the parking area at Koppenstraße corner Palisadenstraße into a city square. This new space will feature play areas, a traffic-calmed section of Koppenstraße, and a health garden with movement offers.
The renovated health center is located near the Margarethe-von-Witzleben school, which specializes in hearing-impaired children. The changes are expected to create a more inviting and accessible environment for various groups, changing the character of the health center and making it more welcoming.
