Renovation and new constructions of schools interspersed among office buildings in Frankfurt, Germany
Frankfurt Accelerates School Expansion with ABG Frankfurt Holding
In a bid to address the growing demand for educational space in the expanding city of Frankfurt am Main, a new framework agreement between the city and ABG Frankfurt Holding is fast-tracking renovations and constructions at various schools.
Recently, Sigrid Eichler, the long-serving head of the Department for Construction and Real Estate, retired early. Her tenure saw significant strides in school construction since the department's establishment in 2017. Under her leadership, the department played a central role in ensuring the city's schools have the necessary facilities to cater to the increasing student numbers.
One of the schools that benefited from this collaboration is the Berthold-Otto School, where five classrooms were completely renovated. The Liebig School and the Ludwig-Erhard School also received improvements, with new floors and lighting installed. Three special needs classes from the Panoramaschule are now using the facilities.
The Friedrich-List School in Nied was comprehensively renovated and received an extension with additional classrooms during the summer holidays of 2025. A temporary sports hall was constructed on the outdoor space, while the sports hall itself underwent renovation. Unfortunately, the sanitary facilities at the Steffi-Jones School encountered delays due to the construction condition being worse than expected.
To accommodate schools temporarily, Frankfurt is using a vacant office building on Mittlerer Hasenpfad. This rental agreement, for a period of eight years with an option for a further two years, will house the upper school of KGS Niederrad and the Martin-Buber School, among others. The landlord carried out the renovations for the schools.
Frank Junker, CEO of ABG, praised the close collaboration of all involved parties. He highlighted that the diverse measures aim to secure the growing demand for educational space in the short and long term. The ABG has also concluded a framework agreement with ABG Frankfurt Holding to implement smaller and medium-sized renovations at around 20 schools more quickly.
This initiative by the city of Frankfurt is a significant step towards ensuring that its schools can accommodate the increasing number of students effectively. The close collaboration between the city, ABG, and ABG Frankfurt Holding will undoubtedly contribute positively to the educational landscape of Frankfurt am Main.
