Renovation Professionals Engaged for £2.5 Million Facelift of Glasgow Pipe Fabrication Facility
In a significant move for the continued regeneration of the Barras area, Scotland-based architects O'DonellBrown have been chosen to manage the conversion of a B-listed former pipe factory in Glasgow. Built in the 1870s, the building has been unused for its original purpose since 1955.
The project, which aims to provide a template for future similar retrofit projects, is considered an opportunity to deliver an exemplar scheme for future retrofit projects. The goals include helping the environment by improving the building's energy efficiency and installing a low-carbon heating system.
The work on the building includes repairing its fabric and features, making it fully accessible, putting in insulation and improving energy efficiency, installing a low-carbon heating system, and overhauling the services. The facility will be dedicated to young people, the local community, and aspiring small businesses, artists, architects, and designers.
The facility will feature a 'creative hub', office space for small businesses, and flexible, accessible public space. Local practice Loader Monteith will serve as conservation architect on the project. Sam Brown, practice director of O'DonellBrown, expressed delight at being selected for the project, viewing it as embodying all that is good about retrofit schemes.
Since 2015, the factory has been used for exhibitions, events, and artists' studios. The regeneration scheme also aims to help small businesses during difficult financial times. The project is significant for the continued regeneration of the Barras area of Glasgow.
The Pipe Factory project is not just a retrofit project; it's a step towards a greener, more accessible, and vibrant community space. With its focus on energy efficiency, low-carbon heating, and support for small businesses, the project is set to make a positive impact on the local area and serve as a model for future retrofit projects.
