Avis Introduces Contactless Car Rental Service in New Zealand

Avis, a global leader in car rental services, has revolutionised the rental experience in New Zealand with the introduction of the Avis Preferred Straight-to-Car service. This innovative service, available at multiple airports across the country, aims to meet the tech-driven expectations of customers, mirroring the ease and speed of online services like grocery delivery and accommodation booking.

The Straight-to-Car pick-up option, now available at airports in Auckland, Hamilton, Palmerston North, Rotorua, Wellington (including Wellington city), Nelson, Picton, Blenheim, Christchurch, and Invercargill, is designed to improve efficiency and reduce contact during the rental process. With this service, customers can bypass the rental counter, a New Zealand-first in the mainstream rental-car industry.

To access this service, customers need to be members of Avis Preferred, a free membership open to both local and international customers. The membership allows users to select their car through the Avis Preferred app and swap it instantly if needed, with the new selection updating immediately.

The technology behind Straight-to-Car is similar to that used by car-sharing services. It enables modern cars to sync with a cellphone for unlocking, locking, and starting. This contactless pick-up service is intended to offer customers a more convenient and touchless rental experience, matching the ease and speed that travellers now expect from the travel industry.

Customers can now find the Straight-to-Car pick-up option at airports in Auckland, Hamilton, Palmerston North, Rotorua, Wellington (including Wellington city), Nelson, Picton, Blenheim, Christchurch, and Invercargill. Avis has announced that the service will be available at Napier, Tauranga, and Dunedin from August 18, and at New Plymouth from September 1, with Queenstown following on September 8.

While there is no publicly available information on when the Straight-to-Car pick-up option will be available at the airports in Napier, Tauranga, and Dunedin, Avis is committed to expanding this service across New Zealand to offer a more seamless and efficient rental experience to its customers.
