In a significant move to bolster emergency services, a new air rescue site is set to open in Lahr, Baden-Württemberg. This development, announced by the Ministry of the Interior, for Digitalization and Municipalities, follows the recommendations of the Structure and Demand Analysis of Air Rescue in Baden-Württemberg (May 2020).

The new site, scheduled to commence operations on July 1, 2026, will be operated by DRF Luftrettung gemeinnuetzige GmbH. The company was successful in a procurement procedure involving three offers from renowned air rescue companies. The concession for this new site has a term of 15 years.

DRF, which currently operates seven air rescue sites in Baden-Württemberg, will expand its operations to a total of eight stations from 2026 onwards. The new site on the Lahr-Freudenstadt axis will improve the supply structure for the population in the Ortenau Circle and northern Black Forest.

The helicopter to be deployed at the Lahr site will be an Airbus H145 D3 with a five-blade rotor. The Ortenau Clinic will ensure the medical staffing of the helicopter. The pilots and medical-technical crew will be provided by DRF.

The existing ten air rescue sites in Baden-Württemberg, including the new Lahr site, will be able to reach every location in the state within 20 minutes during the day once all recommendations of the air rescue report have been implemented.

The contract for the new air rescue site at Lahr Airport was awarded to DRF Luftrettung on July 21, 2025. Further air rescue sites in Baden-Württemberg will be tendered through additional procurement procedures.
