Research Infrastructure for National Data: TUD Assumes Central Position

The Technical University of Dresden (TU Dresden) is at the forefront of the National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI) initiative, participating in ten of the currently 19 funded consortia. This announcement comes after the German Research Foundation (DFG) decided to fund an additional ten NFDI consortia in the second round of calls for proposals on July 2, 2021.

One of the key consortia that TU Dresden is involved in is NFDI4Earth. Prof. Lars Bernard, Spokesperson for NFDI4Earth, based at the Centre for Digital Information and its Applications (CDIO), TU Dresden, leads this consortium. Joerg Seegert, Coordination Office for NFDI4Earth, based at the Chair of Geoinformatics, TU Dresden, supports Prof. Bernard in this endeavour.

NFDI4Earth aims to develop the next generation of data exchange and analysis environments for Earth System Sciences. The consortium takes care of the digital needs of researchers, managing large volumes of sensor and simulation data. The website for NFDI4Earth can be found at https://www.nfdi4earth.de/.

Prof. Bernard's contact email is [email protected], while Joerg Seegert can be reached at [email protected].

TU Dresden's involvement in NFDI4Earth is not its only contribution to the NFDI initiative. The university is also a part of six additional NFDI consortia, although the specific names of these six other consortia are not explicitly listed in the provided search results.

The NFDI, established in 2018 by the federal and state governments, aims to set standards in data management, secure research data, and ensure its reusability for various purposes. The initiative is funding a total of 30 consortia over the next ten years, with each consortium receiving around 85 million euros per year.

Other NFDI consortia that TU Dresden is involved in include FAIRmat, Text+, NFDI-MatWerk, PUNCH4NFDI, and NFDI4Chem. FAIRmat's website is located at https://www.fair-di.eu/fairmat/fairmat_/consortium, while Text+ can be found at https://www.text-plus.org/. NFDI-MatWerk's website is available at https://nfdi-matwerk.de/, and NFDI4Chem's website is located at https://nfdi4chem.de/.

The NFDI at the DFG can be found at https://www.dfg.de/nfdi/. For more information about NFDI4Culture, visit https://nfdi4culture.de/. NFDI4Ing's website is located at https://nfdi4ing.de/. The Global Human Genome Archive (GHGA) can be found at https://ghga.dkfz.de/.

These consortia will be selected in three funding rounds. The NFDI continues to play a crucial role in making research data more usable for national and international science.
