The poll, conducted between August 14-17, surveyed 604 DC residents and found that approximately 8 in 10 oppose Trump ordering the federal government to take control of the city's police department. This strong opposition is reflected in the fact that only 17% of respondents support the decision.

The percentage of DC residents describing crime as an extremely or very serious problem has decreased to 31%. However, the increased federal presence in the city over the past week has left 61% of Washington, DC, residents feeling less safe as a result of Trump's actions.

Local police officers have been seen participating with Immigration and Customs Enforcement checkpoints, which has raised concerns among residents. A 71% majority of DC residents believe DC police should not help the federal government much or at all to deport undocumented immigrants living in the city.

The citizens of Washington, DC, have reacted with anger, disbelief, and strong criticism to President Trump’s takeover of the city police and the deployment of the National Guard. City officials reported that crime had actually decreased, rejecting his justification that rising crime necessitated these actions.

Mayor Muriel Bowser's rating stands at 53%, while Trump's overall job approval rating among all DC residents is a low 15%. Among DC residents who do not know a recent crime victim, support for Trump's actions is 8%.

Interestingly, the poll also found that the majority of DC residents believe that increased economic opportunities in poor neighborhoods, stricter national gun laws, an increased number of Metropolitan Police officers patrolling communities, and using outreach workers to resolve disputes would help to reduce violent crime. A 54% majority of DC residents believe the problem of crime in the city is improving.

In conclusion, the poll results indicate that the citizens of Washington, DC, are largely opposed to President Trump's actions regarding the city's crime and policing. They believe that the problem of crime is improving and that various strategies, such as increased economic opportunities and stricter gun laws, would be more effective in reducing violent crime than Trump's actions.
