Restrictions on gambling in Riga's legality under review again by Latvian authorities

In a recent development, a collective petition has been submitted to Latvia's Constitutional Court, challenging certain gambling restrictions in Riga. The petition, filed by gaming companies, argues that these measures violate Latvia's Constitution.

The challenged provisions primarily relate to the location of gambling activities and the procedures for revoking previously issued licenses. Under current rules, gambling hall operations are prohibited near protected territories, educational institutions, transport hubs, cultural landmarks, and in municipally-owned premises.

The Constitutional Court has initiated a case in response to the petition. Riga City Council has been given until October 27 of this year to submit its arguments in defense of the challenged provisions.

This is not the first time gambling regulation in Riga has been the subject of legal disputes. In the past, Riga's authorities have made repeated attempts to reduce the number of gambling establishments in the city, citing the need to protect public interest and minimize social risks associated with gambling addiction.

However, the search results do not provide information about any gaming companies in Riga actively engaging in efforts to lift certain gambling restrictions, or about the companies behind those gaming companies.

The preparatory stage of the case will be completed upon receipt of all materials, with a target completion date set for January of the following year. The outcome of this case could potentially have significant implications for the gambling industry in Riga.

Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.
