Jerry Nadler Bids Farewell to Congress after 34-Year Career

Rep. Jerry Nadler, a long-standing figure in American politics, announced his retirement from Congress, ending a distinguished 34-year career. Nadler's decision leaves the 12th Congressional District of New York open, and several potential candidates have emerged.

Among the rumoured contenders are City Council Members Keith Powers and Erik Bottcher, state Sen. Liz Krueger, Assembly Member Linda Rosenthal, and former Federal Trade Commission Chair Lina Khan. Notably, Bottcher and Alex Bores, a software engineer with a reputation for his bills regulating AI technology, have already begun making calls to potential supporters.

Bottcher, who previously worked on LGBTQ+ and HIV/AIDS issues for the City Council before joining then-Gov. Andrew Cuomo's administration to work on marriage equality, has also served as chief of staff to former City Council Speaker Corey Johnson. Bores, who worked at the controversial surveillance company Palantir, has gained a following for his legislative efforts in AI regulation.

Micah Lasher, another potential candidate, won an open Assembly seat last year and is currently in his first term in the state Legislature. Lasher, who has worked as an aide to Jerry Nadler, former Mayor Michael Bloomberg, and Gov. Kathy Hochul, is seen as Nadler's likely heir.

Lasher, however, will have to compete for the seat, as Bores and Bottcher are also considering a run. If they do, they will join City Council Member Shahana Hanif, who is reportedly considering a run for the congressional seat.

In response to Nadler's announcement, both Bores and Bottcher lauded his career, expressing a desire for similar representation in the 12th Congressional District. Bottcher issued a statement honouring Nadler's legacy and urging to carry his work forward. Bores tweeted about Nadler's career, expressing a desire for similar representation in the 12th Congressional District.

Meanwhile, Liam Elkind has declared himself the primary challenger to Jerry Nadler. Elkind, who has not held political office before, will face an uphill battle against the established candidates.

As the race heats up, the voters of the 12th Congressional District will have a crucial decision to make. The future of the district lies in their hands.
