In a touching tribute, Woody Woodmansey, the 75-year-old drummer and the last surviving member of David Bowie's iconic Spiders from Mars band, shared a heartfelt memory of his final interactions with the legendary musician.

The occasion was the first ever Ziggyfest, a music festival held in London to celebrate Bowie's life and music. Woody and his band were paying homage to Bowie by performing his early albums for fans during their tour.

On the eve of Bowie's 69th birthday and the release of his final album, Blackstar, Woody and his band decided to call Bowie to wish him a Happy Birthday. During their phone conversation, Bowie was wearing a bowler hat, a signature accessory, and revealed that he had lost his hair due to chemotherapy.

Little did they know, this would be their final contact with Bowie. The next day, they heard the devastating news that Bowie had passed away.

Tony Visconti, a producer who worked closely with Bowie, was also taken aback by the news. He had known Bowie was ill but was not aware of the extent of his condition.

The Ziggyfest event was not just a celebration of Bowie's life and music, but also a fundraiser for charities. Fans and friends gathered to honour Bowie, sharing their own memories and paying tribute to the man who had touched so many lives.

Woody initially believed Bowie was ill but not seriously, assuming it was a simple problem. However, it was only known to close friends like Tony Visconti and Woody that Bowie was undergoing chemotherapy treatment before his death in January 2016.

At the time, Woody and Tony were touring together in a tribute band called Holy Holy. Bowie was expected to join them in New York but unfortunately did not show up.

As we remember Bowie, Woody's emotional recollection serves as a poignant reminder of the man behind the music, and the deep connections he formed with those around him.
